Art History Course: Back To The Future? Cubism and Futurism

The Chantry, Thornbury

10.30am–3.15pm, fee: £38 (or £64 for both spring term days)

Today we will explore two intriguing early Modern Art movements.

In 1907 Georges Braque visited Pablo Picasso's studio in Montmartre to see his painting: Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. He was shocked! But soon joined Picasso in a period of intense experimentation.

The art critic Louis Vauxcelles described Braque's paintings as 'bizarreries cubiques' and inadvertently named the new movement.

Futurism exploded onto the scene on 5th February 1909, with a strident manifesto written by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. It was less and art manifesto and more a call to arms.

Former university lecturer Lynne Gibson is an experienced tutor with a vast collection of slides and her talks are always illuminating and inspiring.
