Acton Court, Iron Acton
Visit Acton Court for the end of season event ‘Tudor Jamboree’. This year’s guests include:
Ian Pittaway - Stringed Instruments of the Tudor Court
Professional early music historian and player, Ian Pittaway, will present a session featuring stringed instruments that were played at Henry’s Court. These include a variety of lutes, renaissance guitar and mandore. He will explain the history of the instruments, the music and perform songs of the Tudor period. Not to be missed by music enthusiasts.
Raptorcare Falconry
Tony Bryant of Raptorcare will be at Acton Court with his magnificent birds of prey. Presenting as Robert Cheeseman, Falconer to Henry VIII, he will have a living history display tent on site. Visitors will be able to interact with Tony and engage with the birds close up.
Tudor dressing - Lady Samantha and the Six Queens
Lady Samantha of ‘The Tudor Royalty Experience’ returns with her six queens along with husband Henry VIII. There will be a Tudor dressing up in the morning and a dressing down in the afternoon. Courtly habits and behaviour will be discussed along with the day to day lives of the Tudors which included dancing and games. Visitors will be invited to join in!
You will also have the opportunity to make your own Tudor French Hood Headband.
Tudor Rose Jewellery
Jennifer Lamb of ‘The Enchanted Tudor Rose’ will display and talk about her replica jewellery designed for the TV series ‘Wolf Hall’. She will bring examples of her work and demonstrate how she makes it.
Merchant House Artisans
Mistress Mary and Master Richard visit Acton Court.
Mistress Mary provides a display of medieval and Tudor plants, focusing on plants used around the home for laundry, cosmetic, natural dye, hygiene and medicinal purposes. The display includes vinegars, floral waters, soaps, simple remedies, balms and syrups using recipes from period leech books and herbals. Many of the native plants featured are still grown at Acton Court .
Master Richard is a Tudor Tailor and will discuss and demonstrate the intricacies of period garment making and the types of garments worn. The display comprises clothing and accessories of the period, as well as historical replicas of the tools of the tailors trade. There will be examples of different types of cloth and yarn and the types of natural dyes used to colour the cloth.
Tudor Portrait - Paint a Tudor Queen
Concept artist and illustrator Chloe Drew will be on site assisting visitors who would like to paint a royal portrait.
Tudor Garden Guide
Deb Randall is a gardener at Acton Court. She knows the wildlife, plants and flowers that grow here and specialises in native trees.
Deb will be on site to answer visitor’s questions about the gardens and grounds.
Organic Blooms
Organic Blooms will have a stall displaying cut-flowers grown at their nine acre farm in Latteridge. The team will talk about how the flowers are grown and why it’s important that they’re organic.
Admission times: There will be two time slots 10:30–13:00 and 14:00–16:30.
Admission prices: Adult £16.96 (includes Eventbrite booking fee). Children, 11 and under, by arrangement, email info@actoncourt.com.
There will be no audio guides for this event but visual and written information will be provided. Blue Badge Guides will be on site to answer your questions.
There is free parking and partial access for disabled visitors. Light refreshments are available on site: tea, coffee, soft drinks, ice cream and a wide selection of cakes and pastries, including gluten free options.
