Heritage Open Day

St Mary's Church, Thornbury

To celebrate Heritage Open Day, St Mary's Church in Thornbury will be opening its tower to visitors, offering a unique view of the River Severn and the surrounding countryside.

Visitors can climb the tower to the top and on the way learn about the church bells in the ringing room and view the clock mechanism. The climb involves 133 uneven stairs and is quite a work out to reach the top. Children under 8 years old are not allowed up the tower.

While the tours are free, booking is essential and subject to weather conditions. To book your tour, please email below or call 01454 281 900. Tours run 1pm until 4.30pm. The church offers wheelchair access, but unfortunately, the tower does not.

Refreshments will be available. Mothers' Union will be running a plant, produce and craft stall.

Additionally, on Saturday 12 September, St Mary's Church will welcome participants of Ride and Stride, an event in support of the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, starting from 10am. If you would like to be involved or would like further information on Ride and Stride it can be found on the Benefice website below.

St Mary's only opens the tower to the public once a year on this day, please seize this special opportunity to experience the unique views.
