Art History Course: How To Interpret "Double Dutch"

The Chantry, Thornbury

10.30am–3.15pm, fee: £38 (or £64 for both spring term days)

Today we will uncover double meanings in Dutch "Golden Age" paintings.

Merchants of the seventeenth century Dutch Republic filled their town houses with art. A favourite subject was scenes of everyday life: Genre paintings depicted behaviour both good and bad.

Still lifes reflect the prosperity of the new Republic, celebrating an abundance of foods and treasured possessions.

We will enter a world of subtle hints, spoken through a language of symbols, emblems and motifs.

Former university lecturer Lynne Gibson is an experienced tutor with a vast collection of slides and her talks are always illuminating and inspiring.

To enrol please email Liz Wilkins below or call 07709 235798.
