Mad Jack and The Severn Bore and The Fearless Navigator
The Armstrong, Thornbury
Action Arts Group presents a two part monologue by John Bassett.
In 1955, Colonel John Fleming Churchill became the first man to surf the Severn Bore. Known as Mad Jack, he was a champion archer, commando and bagpipe player with a fearless spirit, leading his men into battle with his claymore sword. He rode a motorbike across Burma, escaped from prisoner of war camps and played his bagpipes up Vesuvius. John Bassett tells this gripping monologue, which is thought provoking, poignant and funny.
In his second monologue, The Fearless Navigator, John looks at the life of Howard Blackburn, who in 1899, sailed single handed across the Atlantic from Gloucester Massachusetts to Gloucester England, despite the previous loss of his fingers through frostbite.
The performances look at remarkable men who made history by overcoming different kinds of adversity.
