West African Drumming Workshop

Thornbury Library

2-3pm

Part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2026 - Read to the Beat collection

Join us at the library for a fun workshop with celebrated performer and educator Batch Gueye for the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge!

Explore the rich traditions of West African culture in these hands-on sessions for children aged 6 and over. The workshop includes:

live drumming on djembe and dun dun drums
call-and-response singing and traditional songs
storytelling rooted in West African heritage
creative rhythm-building and teamwork
movement and dance, bringing the rhythms to life
a joyful, collaborative “big performance” finale

No experience needed – just bring your energy and curiosity!

Every child is encouraged to take part, build confidence, and express themselves in a supportive and welcoming environment. You can bring ear defenders for your child or yourself if this will help make it a more comfortable experience.

Batch Gueye, founder and director of Sabar Family Ltd, brings authentic West African performing arts to schools and local communities, specialising in Dance, Drumming, Singing, Storytelling, and Theatre. Drawing on his Griot heritage and extensive experience as both performer and educator, Batch delivers dynamic workshops and residencies that immerse pupils in the traditional music, dance, and history of diverse West African tribes and ethnic groups.

Children taking part must be 6+ and accompanied by an adult. Younger siblings are welcome to stay with their parents and carers to watch.

Please book a ticket for each child taking part in the workshop. Adults and younger siblings do not need to book a ticket.
