10am: Come and see The Armstrong
Armstrong Hall Complex
10am-4pm
Before the transformation of The Armstrong begins, we're offering a last chance to see the venue in its current state!
This is a wonderful opportunity to walk through the familiar spaces one last time before the exciting changes take hold. Free parking will be available nearby in the St. Mary’s Street car park. There will be light refreshments available.
Regrettably, it is not a safe environment for children at present.
But if you're game to help out, and are able-bodied, there might be opportunities to give us a hand with some furniture-shifting on the day! Clear instruction will be provided.

Get ready for some fantastic news – we're thrilled to announce that the Thornbury Community and Arts (TCA) officially has the keys to The Armstrong Hall Complex as the new tenants! This marks a monumental step forward for our project to reopen The Armstrong as a community and arts hub in Thornbury.
We're also delighted to confirm that building works are due to begin in July. This initial phase will focus on revitalising the Cossham Hall and creating a brand-new, modern foyer. Our aim is to have these areas ready for reopening in Winter 25/26. We’re especially pleased to share that funding for this crucial first phase has been fully secured.
This is truly the start of real action for The Armstrong, and we couldn't have reached this point without your support. Thank you all for sticking with us!

Thornbury’s beloved cultural and community hub is making a grand return with a brand-new look and renewed purpose. Formerly known as The Armstrong Hall Complex, the newly named The Armstrong is set to become a revitalised and dynamic venue for the community. Thanks to the expertise of local volunteers and businesses the venue will feature a fresh, contemporary aesthetic while preserving its historic charm.
The transformation of The Armstrong has been made possible through the collaboration of the Armstrong Hall Trust and Thornbury Community and Arts. With renovations starting in spring, The Armstrong is on track to open its Cossham Hall and Foyer in Winter 2025/26, followed by the main 300 seat theatre from mid-2026.
The ambitious refurbishment project will bring the venue up to modern standards while providing a welcoming space for events, performances, and community gatherings. The revitalised venue will feature a fully upgraded foyer with improved accessibility, modernised facilities, and a welcoming bar and function space.
Users can expect an exciting line-up of events for all ages and backgrounds. From laugh-out-loud comedy nights and inspiring TED-style talks to enchanting family theatre performances, hands-on creative workshops, and welcoming social gatherings, there will be something for everyone. Whether you're looking to be entertained, learn something new, or connect with others in the community, The Armstrong will be the place to be!
The cost of renovations is estimated to be just over £2m. TCA have secured funding to enable the Cossham Hall and the Foyer to open which is a tremendous achievement. A significant milestone in the project was securing major funding from generous donors, including Maggie Lansdown, whose contributions have laid the foundation for this ambitious endeavour. A fundraising campaign will now launch to secure the funds for the main 300 seat theatre.
“The Armstrong is more than just a venue. Our mission is to become again the heart of Thornbury’s cultural and social life,” said Jill Dimond, representative of Thornbury Community and Arts. “With a fresh new look and a professional events team in place, we’re committed to creating an exciting, inclusive, and financially sustainable space that will serve the community for generations to come.”
